The bakery’s customers include Rochester Institute of Technology, Turning Stone Casino Resort, Cornell University and Rochester General Hospital. Leo’s has six trucks and delivers to hundreds of restaurants, hospitals and schools. Two full-time salespeople and a general manager are responsible for most of the bakery’s marketing. “We thought it was good common sense it made good financial sense too,” Patrick Bernunzio said. Bernunzio plans to reduce overhead and shipping costs with the acquisition and the consolidation of both retail businesses at the Atlantic Avenue location and the wholesale businesses at the East Rochester location. The new location has 1,500 square feet of freezer space and has a dock for easier loading and unloading. The East Rochester facility will open in September. “Elite makes cookies only, but they go to the same businesses we do,” Patrick Bernunzio said. Elite’s cookies will complement the Bernunzios’ product list and already go to many of the Bernunzios’ current customers, officials said. Officials declined to reveal the terms of the acquisition. “(The acquisition) will probably double our sales in the baking business because (Elite) had about as much business as we did,” Patrick Bernunzio said. The retail part of both businesses will be combined at Leo’s Atlantic Avenue address. Like Leo’s, 75 percent of Elite’s business is wholesale, which will be centralized in a newly renovated 10,000-square-foot location in East Rochester. Leo’s will combine most of Elite’s work force with its own, growing the number of employees at Leo’s from 20 to 35. Located at 709 Atlantic Ave., Elite will close its doors this week.
